Stop worrying, start working

Stress is known as the “21st century epidemic” and the number one killer according to the World Health Organization. Increased stress within your organization slows productivity, kills creativity and causes employee engagement to suffer. Here are 3 tips to control your reaction to stress, stop worrying and start working to your full potential.

Show  up bright and early

The early bird catches the worm! Come in 30 minutes earlier, take this quiet time to savour your morning cup of coffee in peace.  Then, attack your inbox without being distracted; you’ll have time to thoughtfully respond to your emails. This way, you’ll clear up your inbox before the day’s tasks start trickling in. Who wouldn’t give up a few minutes of sleep to start a stress-free day? 

Planning is the key

Let’s face it, our attention is torn between a hundred projects, demands and “putting out fires”. Focus on what is important: take 10 minutes at the end of each day to build your 6-item To Do list for the next day. You say you would have 20 items on this list? Figure out how long each task should take, enter it into your online scheduler or write it in your agenda to be included on one of your next To Do lists. Prioritize the 6 items and cross them off your list when they are done. If you didn’t have time to finish a task, write it on tomorrow’s list. “Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort”, says Paul J. Meyer.

Fiercely protect your private time

Smartphones are definitely great business tools, but they can make you feel like you’re always just a click away from the office. It’s probably hard to turn off your cell phone as soon as you leave the office, but you certainly can set some boundaries by designating unplugged time and fiercely protecting it. And remember, because you were productive all day, you have earned this unplugged time. 

“Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.” said Hans Selye. So change your attitude toward stress and start living without worry and working to your full potential.
